Description: This medieval parish church is known locally as the "Cathedral of the Fleggs" due to its large size and 98-foot tower. The present building was completed around 1450. Location: Situated on Black Street, up from the village centre. Features: It features a fine hammer beam roof with carved angels, medieval stained glass, and a 15th-century "seven sacrament" font. The chancel was rebuilt in the 1870s and contains rich Victorian decorative elements.

Architectural features

  • Hammer beam roof: The nave features a fine hammer beam roof with carved angels. Victorian restoration saw the number of angels doubled, with ten holding musical instruments and twelve with instruments of the Passion.
  • Tower: The striking 98-foot tower contains a ring of six bells and a spiral staircase of 119 steps.
  • Stained glass: The church contains 15th-century stained glass in the east windows of the north and south aisles, and the west window has 14th-century castellated tracery. The chancel features impressive 19th-century glass by Hardman & Co.
  • Seven Sacrament Font: A rare 15th-century Seven Sacrament font is located inside the church.
  • Organ: A tracker action organ, built in 1871 by Forster and Andrews, was moved to its current position in 1999.
  • Other details: You can also find poppy head pews featuring the Medieval green man, a parish chest dating from around 1300, and memorial grave slabs.

Martham Methodist Church is a historic church located in the centre of Martham, a village near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Originally a Primitive Methodist chapel, the church was built in 1880 and sits near the village's greens and duck ponds.

Weekly services and events - Sunday service: The main service is held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m..

Coffee morning: A coffee morning with home baking and produce is offered on Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., except for Bank Holidays.

Knit and Natter: A weekly Knit and Natter social group meets on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m..

Other groups: Various other village groups use the church premises throughout the week.

Facilities and accessibility - The church is wheelchair-friendly and includes an accessible toilet. It also has a "Loop" system for people with hearing difficulties.

Location and transport - Parking: There is some car parking available across the road in the Co-op shop car park, or near the pond approximately 200 yards away. The church is about a 15-minute walk from the Martham Ferry Staithe.

The Baptist congregation in Martham, Norfolk, operates under the name Cornerstone Baptist Church and Martham Baptist Chapel. The church was built in 1880 on The Green and has a long history in the village.

History: The current chapel on The Green opened for its first services on March 29, 1880. It was preceded by a smaller chapel located near what is now Oak Tree Close, which included a graveyard. The land for this original chapel was likely donated by a prominent local Baptist family.

The historic Baptist graveyard at Oak Tree Close was rewilded and reopened to the public in November 2024, raising awareness of this important part of the village's heritage.
